June 2011 - PABX Transition: Disconnecting the Connection to Connect (NEW)

This morning, after I finished the script of the 41st episode of Disney's Stitch, I raced downstairs to the GGS Conference Room. Channeling Stitch, the blue monster himself, I charged my way to the old admin room.  When I got there, the room was barely prepped up. It still had whatever left over materials from the previous night's activity. And then I realized I was an hour early. My watch was on Japan time. Argh!

Oh well, better late than never.

I would have gone back to my home, except, I noticed a few things that might prove beneficial later on, as we begin the renovation of our community.

Conference Room Observations
1. The ceiling has excellent height. The room does not suffocate, which means it could be converted into a place of hang-out. Like a library-cum-conference room.

2. The natural light is excellent as well; although, for some reason which elude me, it has six fluorescent lights, activated by two switches.

This, in my money-saving opinion, should be rewired to three. After-all the wndows, provide good lighting as it is. Furthermore, there isn't much difference in illumination when there are three or six lights on. I understand, it could be so because it used to be the Admin Room, but not anymore... so...

Even furthermore, when the room is finally converted, we can have addional fan-chandeliers to add to the illumination.

3. The ventilation is excellent. I spent the whole day till 7PM in the conference room, barely using the electric fan.  If I had a couch, I could have fallen asleep, actually. It was that good, even with the noise level intrusion from the passersby. That was the only problem, because for some reason, the sound seems amplified somehow.

By 830AM the Admin staff had begun coming in, and as they passed by, some of them were either reciting some ineresting mantra, chatting up a colleague or in Lydon's case, singing. The boy had pipes! =)

Ultimately, the room seems perfect for a lounge. A comfy library/conference room. A parlor. A place to meet in with couches, books, coffee table and an open wall for either a wide screen TV or a projector screen. A permanent overhead projector wouldn't hurt either.

But with the latter, we might have too much traffic on rental, then it becomes a place too restricted for simple meets. Still, it's worth considering because if renovated in this manner, it can be a place for minor, more intimate parties now... Ponder on it, and mail me.

PLDT Meeting
Bing invited me to attend the meeting with PLDT Building Industry Consultancy Services rep - Jesryl Lebrilla. His division is in charge of connections to buildings, or any facility requiring five (5) telephone units or more.

There will be a slight delay in their end of the deal. Permits. Pole outside and more permits.

Let's not dwell on those hitches. Or anything whose outcome can no longer be helped; consider your time management inefficient that way. He promised to deliver an immediate stop-gap solution, anyway, in the form of ten to fifteen telephone lines. If delivered, as these advance connections require approval from a separate division.

At first,  it was not enough to make Bing happy. I can empathize. Too many residents to explain to. But below were some of the ideas that bounced around. So she doesn't have to carry around the burden of disappointment from PLDT. It can be very exhausting, after all.

a) Three (3) phones for the Admin. Two direct lines, and a separate facsimile number;

b) One (1) Direct line for the guardhouse. Separate from their intercom connection;

c) PLDT public telephones in every lobby.
Where to put? Suggestions? We do not want any congregating in the area, after all. Loitering is still, last I checked, disallowed.

Oh! What do you think of a lobby intercom phone?
This will make easy on your any last minute reminders. Not needing to go up anymore. Just pick it up and call yaya or your household help...

The future lobby guards can make use of this phone, too, later on.

Ultimately we can expect the installation to commence sometime next, next week. In the meantime, what will happen?

What will happen to our PABX homelines effective July 1?
They will be technically cut. So, there will be no more outside line available. Your numbers will be invalid.

Technically cut?
No physical disconnection. Instead, the disconnection will take place in the PABX control room, which will be eventually be the PLDT, also otherwise known as the EE or electrical room.

What happens after the disconnection?
They will be converted into intercom lines, for our interconnection within the compound complex.
Those who previously had a seven-digit direct line will automatically be given a five-digit local number, and they will be able to connect to all the local lines, from the guard, to the admin, to every unit in the community, as long as you dial the pound key first. E.g. #12345

What happens to the units who have 'local' lines?
Nothing. Those who have the existing five-digit intercom lines will suffer no interruption or any change at all.

What happens to those who do not have the old seven-digit direct line?
They can either apply for the PLDT line (Please refer to the bulleting board downstairs, for contact details of either Rey or Lenny), or  Globe lines (Kenneth), if they want a direct line for outside calls.

What happens to those who did not, do not have the five-digit 'local' lines?
They can wait for their scheduled intercom line connection, or request the Admin to fast-track theirs, if there really is a pressing need, or that your schedule won't permit them.

If not, they can simply delay.
There are enough PORTS/LOCAL CONNECTION for all 786 units within the compound. They can have the connection anytime next time. Just get a proper appointment with the Admin.

Again, this is because of limited personnel with technical know-how, not so much about prioritization of anyone deemed more important than yourself.

Will everyone have an intercom line?
Yes. Everyone will now enjoy the services of the local line. This is the shining accomplishment for the month of July! And to think, it's not yet even July! There's hope yet, huh? That's why, as Atty. Siony said, 'suggest! suggest! ask! ask!'

What do I need to get a 'local' line?
A proper schedule, or appointment, if you will not be able to attend to the prescribed schedule.

Your own telephone unit. Because, there is currently a shortage of units at hand. So while waiting for the official response of the original intercom providers, get yourself a temporary or permanent intercom unit, so that you do not need to wait any longer.

You need this connection anyway to connect to the guards, for emergencies, and visitors, and to call the Admin for whatever reason you might have. Best of all, to order from either Take-out Queen of Tita Cory.

How long will the intercom connection/ conversion take place?
For your unit?
If you had the original direct line, five to ten minutes. The conversion will take place in the control room, followed by the actual checking, in which case, the person from the control room calls your unit, to confirm the connection.

For the entire compound?
Hopefully, by end of July, every will have had an intercom line.

Can I have my intercom unit/ connection moved from the original spot in my unit?
Yes, but due to the limited number of personnel, you will have to wait until all of the scheduled intercom installation has been fulfilled.

Can I still be given an intercom line even if I do not have a telephone/ intercom unit ready?
Yes, so do not fret. The PABX, Admin Reps will bring with them a unit.  After the intercom line has been successfully prepared for a telephone/intercom unit, the PABX/ Admin Reps will temporarily connect their unit, so that the person from the Control Room can confirm the activation of the intercom line in your home.

Afterwards, you can run to the nearest tiangge and buy yourself whatever kind of fancy phone your heart desires.

Will there be a service fee for the intercom connection?
No.

Will there be a monthly fee for the intercom line?
None.

Can I have more than one outside-call direct telephone line?
YES. Except the main connection of the second line will originate from the original master's bedroom. There is a separate pair of cables there that leads directly to the utility room within in your floor.

So, there you have it, folks. Please reconcile these details with the MEMO Bing will release soon. Hopefully, tomorrow.

I would like to thank ATONG, from First Oceanic.  See, not all of them from the previous years could be lumped into the unmentionable lot. He is a member of the original GGS PABX Group of earlier assignments, and a very competent chap who I wouldn't mind working for us within the community =)

Remember, to whom much is given, much is expected. None of those expectations include spam, marketing calls and especially no prank calls of any kind.  Don't those reasons suddenly make you ask, 'why do I need interconnection with my next-door neighbor?' For I personally wonder if the accessibility tramples on my privacy issues... Hmm...

Until the next suggestion comes...
